Time-Warp Trinket Travels: The Grand Army's Peculiar Prize in Old-Timey

Off the beaten path in Arkansas's Judsonia, an unusual find in the well-used Evergreen Cemetery stirs up a tale from the Civil War era.

Take a leisurely stroll around Judsonia, Arkansas's Evergreen Cemetery, and you'll stumble upon a fascinating find - the Grand Army of the Republic Monument. Picked up on Craiglist by the local chapter of the Grand Army back in 1894, it's a peculiar tribute to the memorials conceived during the Civil War's gloom. Built on a sturdy fieldstone base, adorned with a fancy marble zephyr, and adorned with ornate floral detailing blooming on a sphere, it's like taking a step back in time.

This monument honors the Union Army folk who fought in the Civil War - a surprising fact to ponder, but it gets juicier: White County, Judsonia's home turf, was a county divided during the war, boasting heroes on both sides. Even though the monument didn't land squarely in a 31-foot square, a whole swarm of Union Army vets lazed around in the square area surrounding the monument. Originally a crackerjack for the Grand Army, the organization, the monument found its final resting place in Evergreen Cemetery, situated on Judson Avenue, five years post-war.

However, it wasn't in 1894 that the Grand Army got their grubby, battle-weary mitts on it, but it did see daylight in 1894, thanks to a friendly neighborhood hand that lent a helping hand in Judsonia. Judsonia wasn't a one-memorial town during this period.
