The Goethe monument stands in Rome at the Viale Goethe in Villa Borghese. Commissioned by Kaiser Wilhelm II, the monument was designed by the German sculptor Gustav Eberlein in his Berlin atelier. The monument, carved from marble, features Goethe as the central figure on a nine-meter-high pedestal, with three smaller sculpture groups at the base. On the back side of the monument, Faust and Mephisto are depicted, symbolizing the philosopher and the cultural tradition of Germany. On the left side of the front, Mignon and the Harfner are shown, representing the lyrical poetry and the cultural tradition of Italy. On the right side of the front, Iphigenie and Orest are depicted, representing the dramatic poetry and the cultural tradition of Greece. A 1.75-meter model of the monument by Gustav Eberlein is currently on display in the Bauhof in Hannoversch Münden.
