Gijón's Eternal Muse: The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Contrueces

The Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Contrueces in Gijón, Spain, a significant landmark, stands as the patroness of Gijón for numerous years. Although the church’s existence can be traced back to the early 10th century, the documentation supporting this claim is debated. While some argue that the original is an imitative copy of an authentic original dating back to the 10th century, others suggest it is a forgery from the late 11th or early 12th century.

The church stands in the neighborhood of Contrueces, within the urban area of Gijón. The sanctuary is located along the Bishop's Highway, the former royal road from Gijón to Oviedo. During times when the palace, which is only 50 meters away, was vacant, the Enlightenment-era writer and politician Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos found it an ideal setting for writing, meditating, and praying. The palace, vacant at times, served variously as an asylum, seminary, and children’s school.

Although there is debate over the authenticity of the documentation, the sanctuary continues to be a valuable part of Gijón's religious and cultural heritage.
