In Bushnell's Green, you'll find a statue of General Israel Putnam, a 1874 creation by John Quincy Adams Ward. Commissioned by Judge Joseph P. Allyn, this statue was erected to honor Putnam, a key Revolutionary War veteran who fought at Bunker Hill and Saratoga. This statue was the first in Ward's Revolutionary War series, though one's gone missing. The statue's most intriguing aspect? A hidden hut at its base, a charm easily overlooked. This hut saw a past, relocated from Putnam Memorial State Park in Redding, Connecticut, where it once honored Putnam, a figure of the French and Indian War and the American Revolution. In Bushnell, the hut seems forgotten. And yet, its mere presence whispers tales of this American hero, many of which remain hidden, even in Greenwich, where the British chased Putnam down a steep hill during the winter of 1778-1779.
