In the heart of Hartford, Connecticut, lies the Ancient Burying Ground. Formally set apart in 1640, the cemetery was the city's sole cemetery until 1803. It features a variety of stones made from different materials including brownstone, schist, slate, and marble.
The grounds are home to notable figures such as Thomas Hooker, founder of Connecticut, and several governors including William Leete, Joseph Talcott, Thomas Welles, and George Wyllys. It also contains the grave of Moses Dunbar, a Loyalist executed for High Treason and the first person executed by the state of Connecticut.
Nearby is the First Church of Christ, located at the corner of Main and Gold Streets. Built in 1807, the brick structure is a prominent example of Classical Revival architecture and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.
