Barry Mill, an Ancient Oat Mill

Barry Mill, a Category A listed watermill dating back to 1539, is located about half a mile north of Barry Village, near Carnoustie. The mill you see today was reconstructed in 1814. The National Trust for Scotland owns and operates it. The mill was commercially active until 1984 and has welcomed visitors since 1992, thanks to local support and external funding. Demonstrations can be arranged on weekends or by prior agreement. The mill processes pre-processed oats, not sacks from neighboring farms. The mill is part of a 500-year-old tradition requiring expertise to master the technology. Upstream, there's a dam, lade, and intricate machinery in the basement that controls the mill's power.
