In the center of Baltimore, there looms a colossal bronze figure: Colonel George Armistead, the creation of Edward Berge, of Roman Bronze Works, New York. On a brisk September morning, the 12th, 1914, this monument was cast. Its pedestal bears the markings 'CAST BY ROMAN BRONZE WORKS NY' and 'BERGE'. The base is adorned with the names of commissioners. At first glance, this towering metal figure might seem blasé, standing steadfast and unyielding - like a monument should. But it hides a tale deeper than a tombstone.
