Cradled in the Barachois hills, in the heart of Saint-Denis, exists an enchantment, an 18th-century castle revered as 'l'hôtel de préfecture'. This wondrous palace, with its French royal style, was a previous residence of the French Governor General. As time flowed, the prefect of La Réunion graced its halls, continuing the age-old tradition to this very day. Blessed with the prestigious title of 'Monuments historiques', it was honored in 1970 on August 12th, with additional sections bestowed in 2006, making it the oldest such monument on the island, equal in age with the confectionery chapel of Pain de Sucre.
