In the heart of the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife rests the Ermita de San Telmo, a relic of the 16th century. Located in the El Cabo neighborhood in the Cabo-LLanos area, it is one of the oldest temples in the city and on the island of Tenerife. Promoted by the guild of seafarers in honor of its patron, San Telmo, whose image is kept inside, the building serves as a monument of cultural interest. According to tradition, the ceremony of the city's foundation was held on this site in 1494.
The structure features a rectangular floor plan and a nave, highlighting a porch made of black stone and mudéjar artesonado with lacerías on the interior. The hermitage houses paintings of the attack on the island by Admiral Nelson and a small Renaissance altarpiece. For many years, it also sheltered the Cruz Fundacional before it was moved to La Concepción.
Within the hermitage stands a small ex-voto boat, which tradition attributes to the Tenerife pirate Cabeza de Perro. He is said to have delivered it to the Virgen del Carmen on the day of his execution. Every year, a popular pilgrimage called the Romería de la Virgen del Buen Viaje and San Telmo takes place. During this celebration, decorated carts pulled by animals parade before the images of the patron saints, accompanied by groups of people dancing and singing traditional island songs.
