Jean-Marie Valhubert, a native of Avranches, rose through the ranks of Napoleon's army to become a general. He met his end on the battlefield of Austerlitz on 2 December 1805, killed by a canon ball. A century after his death, a statue was erected in his honor in Avranches. The Statue de Valhubert, sculpted by Pierre Cartellier, depicts Valhubert in military uniform, holding a saber, with a symbolic canon ball at his foot. The statue and its pedestal are listed as a historical monument since August 18, 2006.
