A Snippet of History in Hillsboro

Join us as we take a journey back to the roots of Hillsboro, a town steeped in history and charm.

Hillsboro, Virginia, might seem like a peaceful town at first, but it hides a rich history that stretches back for centuries. Originally named ‘The Gap’, its name changed to Hillsboro in 1880. The town is positioned along Virginia State Route 9, forming a linear layout. Its lots are deep and narrow. The pre-1835 houses in the district are characterized by two-story stone construction with gable roofs, a testament to the town's past. Few new houses were built until the late 19th century, when the Victorian era brought new architectural styles, some of which feature Eastlake detailing. In 1979, the National Register of Historic Places recognized the historical significance of Hillsboro, listing 40 contributing buildings within its 60-acre district. The town continues to be a snapshot of Virginia's history, offering a glimpse into its past.
