The 1933 Shell Spectacular Sign in Cambridge

Explore the history of this 1933 Moderne-style advertising sign in Massachusetts.

The Shell Oil Company Spectacular Sign is a historic advertising sign located at 187 Magazine Street in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Built in 1933 by the Donnelly Electric Manufacturing Company, the sign was designed in the Moderne style.

The sign did not begin its life at its current location. It was originally situated on the Shell Company building on Commonwealth Avenue in Boston, which is now the site of the Boston University Academy. In 1944, the sign was moved to its present site adjacent to Memorial Drive.

It is one of only two surviving advertising signs of its type in the area, the other being a Citgo sign in Boston. While regular station signage is updated to reflect the company's current logo, the Spectacular sign itself remains in its current location. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.
