In 1844, Thomas J. Swinney, a pioneer settler of Allen County and prominent Fort Wayne businessman, began construction on a 1 1/2-story brick and limestone structure at 1424 West Jefferson Boulevard.
The house, also known as The Swinney Homestead, was enlarged about 1885 with a 2 1/2-story, square, Late Victorian style brick wing. It features a front porch in the Eastlake movement style.
In 1922, the house and the land for Swinney Park were passed to the city of Fort Wayne. The property is located in the Fort Wayne Park and Boulevard System Historic District and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981.
