The George H. Pendleton House, nestled at 931 Spring Grove Ave in Cincinnati's Prospect Hill neighborhood, was once a refuge for Senator George Hunt Pendleton from 1879 to his passing in 1889. Despite initial reservations, Senator Pendleton profoundly impacted history within its walls in 1882, when he brought the Pendleton Act to life. This Act introduced the notion of hiring public employees based on merit and forever changed the landscape of Civil Service, with the bill being enacted on August 16, 1883.
Regrettably, Pendleton departed from the Senate in 1885, a decision that cost him reelection in 1884 when he faced a lack of support from party operatives who disfavored such reforms. Post-Pendleton, the house saw numerous changes of ownership. However, it attained the distinction of becoming a National Historic Landmark in 1964, and today, this grand 2.5-story brick mansion persists, adapting to serve both commercial and residential purposes.
