The Victorian art and haunted legends of the Pfister Hotel

Explore the grand history of Milwaukee's Pfister Hotel, a Romanesque Revival landmark that holds the world's largest collection of Victorian art and local legends of the paranormal.

Located in downtown Milwaukee, the Pfister Hotel has stood since 1893, opened by Guido Pfister and his son Charles F. Pfister at a cost of over $1 million. Designed by architect Henry C. Koch in the Romanesque Revival style, the building featured modern amenities for its time, including fireproofing, electricity, and thermostat controls. The hotel remains a prominent landmark, listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

In 1962, hospitality magnate Ben Marcus purchased the hotel and added a 23-story addition while preserving the original structure. Today, it remains under the ownership of the Marcus Corporation and is a member of Historic Hotels of America. The hotel is notable for housing the largest collection of Victorian art in the world and has held the AAA Four Diamond award since 1978.

While the main lobby has been restored to its original appearance, the hotel carries a reputation for the supernatural. Some members of the Los Angeles Dodgers avoid staying at the hotel with the rest of the team when playing the Milwaukee Brewers due to legends that the building is haunted. Some MLB players have even claimed to have had paranormal experiences while staying at the Pfister Hotel.
