A Sparkling Symbol of Joy and Wisdom in Milwaukee's Skyline

Decorated in Cream City brick and Art Deco charm, the radiant Wisconsin Gas Building, standing tall at 626 East Wisconsin Avenue, has captivated Milwaukee for 60 years with its warm glow and magical weather beacon.

Erected in 1930, the elegant Wisconsin Gas Building, then known as the Milwaukee Gas Light Building, was born from the creative minds of Eschweiler & Eschweiler. With its vibrant copper hues, whimsical terracotta patterns, and 271-foot elevation, this architectural marvel has been a source of wonder since its arrival. Milwaukee was alive with spirit and hidden stories from a Prohibition-era speakeasy before its arrival. In 2001, it welcomed new stewardship under Wisconsin Energy.

Today, the building hums with life, but the true heartbeat is found atop its graceful silhouette, where the weather beacon, illuminated in 1956, shares the forecast in a dance of colors and shimmering lights. An LED lighting system graced the beacon in 2013, transforming it into a delightful canvas for a myriad of captivating changes, from charity initiatives to sports team celebrations. To remember the beacon's messages, a simple rhyme emerged: 'When the flame is red, the warmth is ahead.

When the flame is gold, a chill unfolds. When the flame is blue, it spells tranquility. From sailors on Lake Michigan to the skyline of Milwaukee, this celestial landmark has shined as a beacon of joy, wisdom, and wonder.
