35-Foot Beacon of Truth in South Side's Bronzeville - Hills for Ida B. Wells

In the heart of South Side's Bronzeville, stands a 35-foot bronze and marble monument, named 'Light, Truth Ida B. Wells National Monument'. This towering tribute honors civil rights champion Ida B. Wells.

Created by artist Richard Hunt, this 35-foot public sculpture pays homage to the tireless work of Ida B. Wells-Barnett, right in her hometown, Bronzeville. Unveiled by the Ida B. Wells Commemorative Art Committee in the year 2021, those in the community helped fund its creation. The monument's name reflects a quote by Ms. Wells-Barnett: 'The way to right wrongs is to turn the light of truth upon them.' It displays two etched images of her, as well as quotes like 'What is or should be a woman?' The monument stands strong and bright, with a mission as clear as the Chicago sky.

This is the first large-scale tribute to a Black woman leader in Chicago and represents a decade-long crusade by the Committee.
