Belarus: Following the Holocaust

För bläddring

The Holocaust is an unending theme, bringing much pain, each sorrowful fate - a separate book. First and foremost, Belarus as a whole became a victim of the Holocaust, with terrible consequences. To understand the damage the Holocaust inflicted on Belarus, its people, and its culture, it is necessary to know about the Holocaust in it. In Germany, concentration camps were still under construction, while in Belarus, mass extermination of Jews began as early as July 1941. The number of Jews exterminated in Belarus was approximately 800,000. The development of the genocide here was more harsh and rapid, with only Jews managing to escape the ghettos and hide in the forests. It's interesting how those who managed to escape were mainly saved by the efforts of partisans. Although some Belarusians still risked and saved Jews, sacrificing their own lives. It should be noted that joining partisan units from the start of the war was forbidden for civilian individuals. Permission was only given in 1943 when an enormous number of Jews had already suffered. The development of the partisan movement in Belarus began in 1941 (from the summer). However, 'partisanizing' was only military at the beginning. And only in May 1943, in accordance with the issued decree, civilians with combat capabilities, including women, were allowed to join partisan units. However, at the same time, a decree was also in effect that prohibited accepting spies in units. To spies during this chaotic time, both innocent people and children could be classified as such and killed.
