Mosaic on the College of Arts

The work on this mosaic panel took one and a half years – it was completed by 1987. Eduard Iodynis, the sketch author, and his colleague, monumental artist Igor Mityaev, had to do everything by hand – even the kiln for firing the tiles. For the first time in mosaic art, ceramics were used instead of smalt – they were ordered from a factory, painted, fired, and broken into modules.

The panel was assembled using the so-called dry method: on a flat surface, pieces of tile were placed according to the sketch (resulting in an 80x80 cm square), then covered with a piece of gauze, and on top, a "layered cake" of wet newspapers was made. They hardened into a strong crust, and the finished square was attached to the wall with cement.
