This monumental mosaic panel was created in August 1972 on the facade of an ordinary five-story panel building. The theme is the glorious path traveled by the Soviet state. In the foreground is a large figure of V.I. Lenin, the founder of the world's first socialist state; above is the red cavalry; below are workers, peasants, scientists, intelligentsia, cosmonauts, and a rocket soaring upwards.
The authors of this complex colored glass mosaic were teachers from the Penza Art School, honored artists of the RSFSR Eduard Iodynis and Lidia Skorobogatova, assisted by Vladimir Maksimov, Yuri Goncharov, and Anatoly Afanasyev.
The mosaic on the end wall of the building at the intersection of Sverdlov and Gogol streets is almost 45 years old. The four-story building of the Precision Electromechanics Plant (TEM) was erected here in the early 1970s. The plant's general director, Nikolai Grigorievich Sazonov, decided to decorate the facade with something unusual and tasked the chief engineer of the capital construction department to come up with a design idea.
The plot of the panel tells the story of the uprising that took place in the Penza province (in the villages of Kandievka, Chernogay, and others) from April 2 to 18, 1861. The peasants were outraged by the conditions of the announced decree on the abolition of serfdom. It was during this uprising that the red flag was raised for the first time in the country's history.
The subject of the mosaic is characteristic of Soviet art: it depicts an assembler, a female crane operator climbing into the crane cabin, slingers holding a slab on outstretched arms, and other colorful characters of the industrial age.
Work on this mosaic panel took one and a half years – it was completed by 1987. Eduard Iodynis, the author of the sketch, and his colleague, monumental artist Igor Mityaev, had to do everything by hand – even the kiln for firing the tiles.
