Tony Rosenthal's 35-foot steel sculpture 5 in 1

Commissioned in 1971, a 35-foot sculpture weighing 75,000 pounds by Tony Rosenthal became the largest metal public art sculpture in New York City.

In 1971, the government of New York City commissioned the sculpture 5 in 1 for a cost of $80,000. Located at 1 Police Plaza in Lower Manhattan, the work was created between 1973 and 1974 and stands 35 feet tall. Made of painted CorTen steel, the sculpture weighs 75,000 pounds.

Tony Rosenthal titled the work as a metaphor for each of New York City's five boroughs: the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island. The sculpture features five interlocking discs, each weighing 15,000 pounds, representing the different boroughs.

At the time of its installation in 1974 on the brick paved pedestrian mall, 5 in 1 was the largest metal public art sculpture installed in New York City.
