Trippin' Through Time: Ladd's Castle, New Jersey's Ancient Gem

Fancy a trip to the past in present-day New Jersey? Swing by Ladd's Castle, a 330-year-old brick marvel, said to be the OG in Gloucester County. Grab your history hat and step through the time-portal.

West Deptford Township's got more contemporary vibes than a Beatles reunion, but when the historical hankerin' hits, Ladd's Castle is the place to be. This 17th-century treasure's been standing tall since 1688, with legendary surveyor John Ladd, who worked for William Penn, snagging the prime real estate and crafting a masterpiece. Nicknamed Candor Hall, this preserved piece of history features Flemish bond and glazed headers. It's the granddaddy of brick houses in Gloucester County, earning itself a place on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.
