Devil's Bridge, Catherine Park, Saint Petersburg, Russia, 196609
At the beginning of the 18th century, five rectangular ponds were formed in steps by constructing several wooden dams. Between 1774 and 1778, under the guidance of engineer Gerard and architect Neelov, work was carried out to reinforce and deepen the ponds, giving their banks natural contours. The dams between them were transformed into "stone cascades with decorations," featuring romantic thresholds made of large boulders, one of which, between the first and second ponds, was named the "Devil's Bridge," and another between the second and third cascade ponds was called the "Green." This is actually a dam, quite tall, forming part of the "large cascade." The dam is decorated with numerous stones and boulders, creating a very picturesque effect, like a secluded corner of the park.
In the 1970s, the "Devil's Bridge" dam was rebuilt according to a new design. In the process, its main scenic qualities were lost.
