A bronze statue, the work of an Italian sculptor, stands proudly in Washington, D.C, at the intersection of Constitution Avenue and Virginia Avenue, on 18th Street. It's known as the 'Artigas' Statue, one of a global set known as 'Statues of the Liberators'. The Washington, D.C. statue, created before 1948, was erected after its non-identical twin in Montevideo, Minnesota. José Gervasio Artigas, also known as 'de facto the father of Uruguayan independence', symbolizes liberty for the United States.
