Nestled in Dougga, Tunisia, the Crescent-Shaped Temple was a marvel built around AD 222 and 235. It was not like the other structures in the city, for it was situated a little apart with an enclosure that mirrored the shape of the crescent moon, much like the goddess Juno Caelestis, whom it honored. The locals often believed that this deity shared a connection with Tanit, another ancient divinity. First discovered in the year 1890, restoration work began on the temple in 1904. Today, it stands tall, a symbol of the creative genius of its builders, and one of the best preserved temples across Africa dedicated to Juno Caelestis, ever so slightly echoing with the faintest whispers of the goddesses it celebrates.
