Reveal the narrative of a General who was executed and memorialised with a relocated obelisk in the year 1842

In the heart of Málaga, Spain, stands the Monumento a Torrijos, a stone obelisk erected in 1842 in honour of the memory of a suppressed General, José María, who met his end by execution 11 years prior. This monument, occupying Plaza de la Merced and enclosed by an iron fence, showcases a square base, a pyramid crowned with laurel wreaths, and a crypt containing the General’s remains. The pyramid displays four laurel crowns on each side and one atop, symbolising the 49 brave soldiers involved in this historical event.

The Monumento a Torrijos was constructed through public donations and various raffles. The remains were shifted from San Miguel Cemetery, and the monument was unveiled on December 11, 1842. However, an earthquake on December 25, 1884, led to a slight dislodging of the upper stone block. Nevertheless, this historical incident continues to be upheld through the monument’s restorations.
