Saltinsky Underground Waterfall is the highlight of Dagestan, a true wonder of nature hidden from prying eyes deep within the Earth's interior. It is located in the canyon of the Saltinka River and is recognized as a natural monument of regional significance.
The waterfall is situated inside a gorge that reaches 40 meters in width and 20 meters in height. The length of the gorge is about one kilometer. The water forming the waterfall belongs to the Saltinka River, which flows peacefully deep within the Kudalinsky Gorge. Halfway along its course, the river suddenly disappears—this is because at this point the stream plunges underground. This is how the unusual attraction—the Saltinsky Waterfall—originates.
The spectacle revealed to tourists underground is incredibly beautiful: droplets falling from above, reflecting off the smooth canyon walls, catching the sunlight, paint the underground realm in various colors, creating whimsical pictures.
The path to the waterfall is challenging; part of the way must be traveled on foot. The route includes walking directly in the river—only this way can one reach inside the gorge. One must prepare in advance for such a walk because the water in the Saltinka, like in any mountain river, is very cold. Spare footwear, thoughtfully taken on the excursion, will help avoid discomfort. If you don’t have a change of shoes, rubber slippers can be rented on-site for a symbolic fee.
Unfortunately, the river’s water is actively drawn off, and the waterfall often stands dry nowadays.
