The Roman gate to a Gaulish city

Standing in the heart of Reims, the Porte Bazée is a Roman monument, built in the 3rd century. Originally an arc monumental, it formed the cardo, an axis (north-south), serving as a gateway to the city of Durocortorum at its southern entrance. However, this gate was soon integrated into the city walls during the era of barbarian invasions. A vestige of the pile of Porte Bazée can still be seen near the university refectory. The Porte Bazée was later known as Porta Basilicaris due to its proximity to the basilica and was classified as a historical monument in 1981.
