Hidden under the contemporary pulse of Reims lies the Cryptoportique de Reims, a monumental subterranean gallery or horreum, artfully masked and dating back to Rome's rule. This colossal structure, stretching 65 meters wide and 250 meters long, forms the northern section of the Roman forum. The gallery is divided by sturdy stone pillars, one wall remarkably bare in the northeast, while the opposite wall promises glimpses of daylight through ground-level windows. Above, a modern equestrian statue overlooks an open-air theater, and the museum-hotel Le Vergeur resides nearby. But what tantalizing secrets do these cryptic stones conceal?
