The Long Forgotten Ruins of the Fairies

A millennia-old site at the heart of Brittany, La Roche-aux-Fées, or The Fairies' Rock, is no ordinary architecture. Standing in the remote small town of Essé, this colossal Neolithic dolmen finds its unusual name from local legends, as it is said to be the ruins of the ancient palace of the fairies. Its northwest-southeast alignment, echoing the winter solstice sunrise, adds an air of mystique to this ancient monument. The structure is dated between 3000 to 2500 BC, and consists of more than 40 massive stones. One of the largest, weighing approximately 45 tonnes, rests on top of the passageway and seals both chambers. Even after thousands of years, some parts of the interior of the tomb remain as they were, untouched, hinting at the glory of long-gone times.
