The shingle-covered Villa du Général

A historic house on Rue de Paris, Saint-Denis, featuring a roof with eight slopes and a refined shingle facade.

Built between the late 1840s and the early 1850s, the Villa du Général, also known as the maison du Général, stands in the city center of Saint-Denis. Located at 49 Rue de Paris, the house is a remarkable structure classified as a Monument historique since July 5, 1993. It has been the property of the Région Réunion since 1999.

The architecture of the house features a facade on the street that receives a more refined treatment than the other sides, being covered in shingles. The roof is composed of eight slopes, with a water drainage system that passes through the interior of the framework. At the beginning of the 20th century, the perimeter wall was replaced by a wrought iron grille.

Additional architectural details include columns on the ground floor that support a first-floor balcony. This balcony is surrounded by a railing with openwork Art Deco patterns and is topped by a pediment decorated with a double frieze of lambrequins. Today, the building remains a preserved piece of the architectural heritage of La Réunion.
