Nestled within the heart of its capital city, Saint-Denis, on the island of Réunion, resides Maison Géry. This remarkable house, dating back to 1820, is located at number 23 on Rue Sainte-Anne. It was listed as a historical monument in 2012. Research work carried out by Bernard Leveneur has allowed the evolution of the building to be traced.
The house showcases seven roofs, which serve as evidence of various additions to the building over time. Due to the presence of termites, the house underwent two renovation campaigns in 2012 and 2014. During these periods, each damaged piece of wood was replaced with an identical piece using traditional methods. The ironwork and joinery were also recovered, and the interior glass doors were restored with colonial glass, which has a blurred or wavy appearance.
Maison Géry is open to visitors, including the garden, dependencies, and the varangue, through the office du tourisme intercommunal. The 20-meter-long stone outbuildings and the old kitchen, featuring a restored wood-fired stove, are also set to be restored.
