The Six-Fingered Monument

The Six-Fingered Monument

Big surprise in Atlanta's Capitol: A statue for a notorious Governor, sporting an extra finger. Ironical, right?

Atlanta's Georgia State Capitol play hosts to Eugene Talmadge's statue, sculpted by Steffen Thomas in 1949. This unique tribute sports an unexpected detail: Talmadge's hand bears six fingers. The oddity has stirred quite a stir, given Talmadge's infamous racist and supremacist beliefs. Born in 1884, Talmadge claimed the Governor seat for Georgia during the 1930s and 1940s. However, he breathed his last in 1946, leaving office before he could fulfill his re-elected role in 1946. The statue's six-fingered hand doesn't parallel the actual Talmadge.
