Delphi's Skyline Doodad: The Soliders 'n' Sailors Monument, Indiana

Who's been watchin' over Delphi, Indiana since 1882, you ask? Let's drop by the bloke up top and investigate why there's a pair of curious muskets at his knees!

Way up in Delphi, Indiana, you'll stumble upon the Soldiers 'n' Sailors Monument – a 37-footer that's been dominatin' the skyline since 1882. Settin' atop a granite base, this fellow up high looks like a Civil War infantryman, standin' tall with a folded flag in hand. He's sportin' a staff with eagles and medals, and if ya squint just right, ya might catch a pair of puzzle-raisin' muskets at his knees. Four bronze panels at the base show off Civil War battle scenes, but it's unclear whether our bronze pal's in 'em. The Carroll County ran an international competition in 1887, bringin' together Austrian architect Friedrich Bruno Schmitz and sculptor Rudolf Schmitz for the job. Some folks argue about the installation date, with stories of 1882, 1886, or 1888. Over the years, the monument has had a bit of TLC, with a significant upgrade in 1993 by the Save Outdoor Sculpture! movement.
