Located in the La Redoute district of Saint-Denis, La Réunion, the chapelle de La Redoute is also known as chapelle Saint-Louis. This Catholic chapel serves as the military chapel for the Saint-Denis garrison. It was built in 1751 as a powder magazine to replace an older structure that posed a danger to nearby houses.
The building was constructed based on plans drawn in 1741. It was positioned on a small plain between the rempart de La Montagne and the Saint-Denis river, placed to be sheltered from fire coming from the sea. This location served as the second line of defense for the Compagnie des Indes.
After two centuries of being used as a gunpowder store, the building was assigned to the Catholic military chaplaincy of the Forces armées de la zone sud de l'océan Indien. It was then converted into the garrison chapel. The building, including its surrounding wall and land, has been on the supplementary inventory of the Monuments historiques since 2007.
