When Detroit city bigwigs decided to throw their city a birthday bash, they went all out. They commissioned a sculptor named Marshall Fredericks to whip up a monument - a 9-ton bronze statue that's been fronting the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center since 1958. Fredericks gave it two titles: The Spirit of Detroit - whose identity remained elusive - and Jumbo, because, let's face it, she's a real heavyweight. Cast in Oslo, Norway, the dynamic duo's Atlantic journey was a real doozy. The figure, standing 26 feet high, with her tall, dark, and handsome lean, casually perched atop a 60-ton marble base. And that's no exaggeration!marble base.
