Founded in 913: The Cradle of Castile, San Pedro de Arlanza

The **monastery of San Pedro de Arlanza** was one of the most important monastic centers in the county and then kingdom of Castile. Although the oldest remains existing today in the monastic complex, corresponding to the church, date from 1080, the congregation was founded in 912, with ruins still visible, in the upper part of the walls that flank the valley. This monastery received the name of "Cradle of Castile" and was in operation until the confiscation of Mendizábal in 1835.

<br> On November 14, 2019, the Castilla y León Symphony Orchestra conducted by Andrew Gourlay premiered at the Miguel Delibes Auditorium in Valladolid *Evocation of the Monastery of San Pedro de Arlanza*, a work by the composer Nuño Fernández Ezquerra, inspired by the ruins of the monastery.<br><br> Gonzalo Téllez and his wife Flámula appear in the foundational document of the Monastery of San Pedro de Arlanza on 12 January 913.
