Kraus' Grave - The Swede Mozart: His Earthly Rest and Beyond

In Solna, Sweden, at Tivoliudden park’s western end, lies the grave of Joseph Martin Kraus, the Swede Mozart. Born in Miltenberg, Germany in 1756, he died on December 15, 1792, aged just 36. Part of King Gustav III’s circle, Kraus composed his final works for the funeral of the monarch, eventually finding his final rest here in 1792. His body was transported across Brunnsvikens ice to Tivolis strand and interned a week later.

The original grave monument was replaced with a new one in 1846. The new monument comprises a memorial stone adorned with a stone resembling a crown, surrounded by four stone pillars. Two inscriptions are engraved on the stone; 'Född 1756 D. 20 Jun. Död 1792 D. 15 Dec.' and 'Här det jordiska af Kraus, det himmelska lefver i hans toner.' A dog named Tiger, whose specific details remain scant in the source material, is also interred at Kraus’ grave site.
