Dragon Bridge, Podkaprizovaya Road, Saint Petersburg, Russia, 196605
The Dragon Bridge, referred to in late 18th-century documents as the bridge "with monstrous figures," was built in 1785 based on a design by Charles Cameron on the alley leading from the palace, in front of the entrance to the Menagerie. Four dragon figures are installed on the bridge, thanks to which it received its current name "Dragon," and the bridge's architecture reflects the fascination with China characteristic of Russia at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. The expressive figures of winged dragons are mounted on granite pedestals. The dragons' paws are stretched forward, their tails curve in steep loops, and their torsos, reminiscent of human forms, are proudly thrust forward. They are assigned the role of guardians of the bridge, as legends say that dragons are sacred creatures, and many myths have been woven around them. Originally, when the bridge was constructed during the reign of Empress Catherine II, the figures were made of limestone; the currently existing cast-iron dragons were cast in 1860 from zinc metal at the Morane factory based on models by the sculptor Schwartz.
The last restoration was carried out in 1983. Five years later, vandals threw a dragon into the water, resulting in a large piece breaking off from the left side; the left wing, both front paws, and an ear were torn off. Repairs were partially made on-site at that time. It took more than a year to restore the sculpture to its original appearance. Some small details had to be recast in cast iron, and the historical fragments were firmly reattached to the torso. Then the sculpture was painted in a dark graphite color.
The Dragon Bridge offers beautiful views of the Cross Canal of Alexander Park.
