Carl Milles' Mysterious Angel Flautist

Carl Milles, a celebrated Swedish sculptor, crafted the Angel playing the Flute, one of his later creations. Winged and musical, the angel is part of a series of celestial and divine motifs by Milles. Originally intended for Sankt Martinsfontänen, the enigma-shrouded angel can now be found at Millesgården, near the Lidingö Bridge, outside Lagga Church in Uppland, on the Milles family grave in Indonesia, in St. Louis, and in London. A replica of the angel was unveiled in Skövde in September 1955, and on that occasion, Milles penned a poem that was read out at the ceremony: 'To you we gather here today, to listen to your flute's play. May you often visit this town and often play with joy. To be able to report back here with happy feelings. And God laughs - when he hears you tell it.'
