The Entomological Woman Statue: A Contentious Installation at Karolinska

Eric Grate, a Swedish artist, crafted The Entomological Woman Statue in the late 1950s. The statue represented three bronze cubic figures: a woman, a man, and a third figure lacking limbs, borne by the man, who had insect-like antennae in his mouth. The woman, crowned and wearing a hat, caused controversy even before installation. The faculty council of the Karolinska Institutet voted against its placement on the premises, 19-6, arguing that it was inappropriate to adorn a medical school with a work whose theme was more about contemplating physical and mental illnesses than the healing power of medical science.
