The Eternal Tussle: A Bronze Italian in America - The Clash between President

Since 1884, a bronze figure, crafted in Rome, Italy, now resides in America, symbolizing the power struggle between the President and the Supreme Court, all under the gaze of Chief Justice John Marshall.

An Italian-forged bronze figure has been a US symbol of administrative disagreement since 1884. Alessandro Nelli was the one who sculpted it, stationed in Rome. American artist, William Wetmore Story, lent his skills to the sword and the book. The figure stands for Chief Justice John Marshall, the 'Constitutional Sherpa', who defined US judiciary's independence from the executive. Originally at the United States Supreme Court Building in Washington, D.C, it now finds its home elsewhere. Other copies can be found at Judiciary Square, John Marshall Park in Washington, D.C, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
