Borgeby: a medieval power's forgotten outpost

A medieval stronghold that hints of more than a thousand years of power-shifts and baking, and one family’s castle. This is the history that Norlind and Kulturen don’t tell.

Sitting beside the Kävlingeån, Lomma Municipality’s Borgeby Castle in Southern Sweden was likely first constructed in the 11th century, and at that time, it was home to a castle or fortress, possibly one of strategic significance for the Danish kingdom. Though this land was once fertile and taxed, by the time of Harald Bluetooth, rulers of the Danish kingdom had begun to lose control over this territory during Harald Bluetooth’s reign. By the 11th century, the architecture, useful then for defence and control, stands today alone as a testament to those power struggles, and the family that has lived there since the 15th century.
