In the Mojave Wasteland, in 2017, Daniel Hawkins' Desert Lighthouse stands. It's not just a monument to a vanished memory, it's a beacon of pilfered dreams and shreds of plundered ambition. In 2014, another lighthouse - snatched from Lucerne Valley - was Hawkins' possession. Was his 'Desert Lighthouse Ultimatum' at the University of California, Riverside’s Culver Center for the Arts Museum a warning? Some in the art world say yes. And on July 1, 2017, the lighthouse ignited, bewildering critics who admired its DIY post-apocalyptic absurdity, but soon it transformed into an altar for the misplaced. As souvenirs and remnants of the vanished began to pile around its base, in 2019, it became a grim memorial.
