Eight-ton ambition personified, the Oregon Pioneer. A 22-foot-tall, 7.7-ton statue, nicknamed Gold Man by locals. Created in New Jersey by Ulric Ellerhusen, he's squatted on the Oregon State Capitol grounds since 1938, costing $85,000. Standing atop a 23-foot marble podium, this hollow brute dons a gold leaf jacket, needing occasional TLC from dust and bird claws. The 23-foot sentinel represents Oregon's bygone pioneer times, standing tall and unflinching, 140 feet off the ground.
