Delmar Post Office: The only post office in Albany County on the National

Constructed in 1939, the Delmar Post Office serves the 12054 ZIP Code and remains a key piece of New York's architectural history.

The U.S. Post Office in Delmar, New York, is located on Delaware Avenue in the middle of the hamlet. Serving the 12054 ZIP Code, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. To date, it is the only current post office in Albany County on the Register.

Constructed in 1939 near the end of the Great Depression, the small brick building was designed by Louis A. Simon, the Treasury Department's supervising architect. Simon designed 13 post offices for New York in the Colonial Revival style, but the Delmar location was the only one of those thirteen to omit a cupola in its design. The building features a one-story, five-bay brick facade with a stone water table and a slate gabled roof.

The double-doored main entrance sits at the top of granite steps with iron railings. Inside, the entry leads to a wooden vestibule and an L-shaped lobby featuring a red-and-black terrazzo floor, white marble dado, and dark marble baseboards. A 1940 mural titled "The Indian Ladder" by Works Progress Administration artist Sol Wilson fills the wall above the postmaster's office, while many of the original furnishings remain in place.
