The 1794 Simonds Tavern in Lexington

Explore the Federal details of Simonds Tavern, a historic wood-frame structure in Lexington, Massachusetts, that transitioned from a tavern to private residences.

Simonds Tavern is a historic wood-frame building located at 331 Bedford Street in Lexington, Massachusetts. The structure is two and a half stories tall, eight bays wide, and features two front entrances with asymmetrically placed chimneys. The interior of the building preserves well-kept Federal details.

Joshua Simonds began constructing the first portion of the building around 1794. He operated a tavern at this site beginning in 1802 and enlarged the structure in 1810 after Bedford Street was cut through the area. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.

Today, the historic structure no longer serves as a public house. The building has been converted into private residences, preserving the exterior character of the 18th-century architecture.
