The history of the Maison Choppy in Saint-Pierre

Explore the history of the Maison Choppy, a heritage building in the heart of Saint-Pierre.

Located at 28 rue Marius-Ary Leblond in the center of Saint-Pierre, the Maison Choppy is an old school building on the island of La Réunion. It has been listed as a Monument historique since December 28, 1984.

Furcy Choppy, a wealthy planter in Saint-Pierre, built the house at the beginning of the 19th century. In the 1830s, it became the property of Blainville Choppy, who founded the Sucrerie de Grand Bois in Saint-Pierre.

In 1895, Charles Coppy ceded the house to the frères des écoles chrétiennes. They established the école Saint-Charles there, naming the school in honor of their donor.
