Nestled in the heart of Midtown Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Broad Street Market has been a vibrant heartbeat of the community since 1863. First established by the Verbeke family, this market stands as one of the oldest continually operating farmers markets in the country. With a tale as filled as its stalls, it's no surprise that the older Stone Market house, completed the same year, was fondly known as West Harrisburg Market House. In the following years, between 1874 and 1878, the Brick Market house made its appearance.
On a sunny April 20th, 1860, William K. Verbeke formalized the West Harrisburg Market Company, marking the beginning of this bustling corner. Over the ensuing decade, this market played an indispensable role in the daily lives of the 300,000 Union soldiers who marched through nearby Camp Curtin. The market was bestowed with a spot on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, and later became the City's cherished responsibility in 1979. The City graced this storied complex with a stunning $2.5 million restoration in 1996, restoring its luster and charm to welcome visitors for the next 165 years and beyond.
