Franklin & Marshall College's Old Main and historic halls

Explore the history of Franklin & Marshall College's Original Buildings, which served as a military hospital during the American Civil War.

The campus of Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, features three historic academic buildings known as the Original Buildings. These include "Old Main," Goethean Hall, and Diagnothian Hall. Built between 1854 and 1857, the structures reflect the Gothic Revival architectural style and were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

"Old Main" was constructed between 1854 and 1856. It is a three-story, T-shaped building with three-story lateral wings. The building features a four-story, square entrance tower with five-story octagonal turrets. The chapel within the building was enlarged in 1874. Flanking "Old Main" are Goethean Hall and Diagnothian Hall, which were completed in 1857. These are 2+1/2 stories tall and feature steeply pitched gable roofs and stepped gables.

During the American Civil War, these buildings served as a military hospital. After the nearby Battle of Gettysburg, many wounded soldiers were treated on campus. The soldiers who died are rumored to haunt the buildings at night, moaning in agony.
